SPF Sunscreen Testing

In vitro and in vivo sunscreen safety and performance testing is required for product release and labelling. Further, rapid in vitro testing is provided to support formula development and intra batch quality control. Various in vivo standard operating procedures ensure compliance to ISO24444 and SANS1557. In vitro sunscreen sample compliance testing is conducted utilising the diffuse transmittance method in the ultraviolet wavelength region from 250 – 450 nm.

In vivo static (dry) and water resistant ISO18861 and ISO16217 SPF testing can be performed to specific country legislation (SANS1557 for South Africa) and in line with the latest international standards. This test method assists with the claim substantiation of “SPF6 up to SPF50+” type claims.
